MHADA Begins Allotment of 827 Rehab Homes in Worli BDD Redevelopment Project

Mumbai’s massive BDD Chawl redevelopment journey has entered a crucial phase as MHADA officially commenced the allotment of 827 rehabilitation homes at the Worli BDD Chawl project — marking visible progress in one of the city’s most closely watched urban transformation initiatives.

The allotment process currently covers eligible residents from wings F, G and H of rehabilitation building number one. On the very first day, 41 eligible beneficiaries received allotment letters, while 36 residents who completed the required documentation were handed possession of their new homes.

Occupancy certificates for the F, G and H wings have already been obtained, allowing MHADA to initiate the possession process after verification of mandatory documents. Beneficiaries have been instructed to remain personally present with rehabilitation agreements, Aadhaar and PAN card copies, notarised undertakings on ₹500 stamp paper for transit camp residents, along with passport-size and family photographs.

The allotment and possession letters are being distributed from MHADA’s project office at Sumer Kendra in Worli between 11 am and 6 pm on working days, excluding public holidays. MHADA has also stated that the collection schedule for allotment letters will continue to be displayed at the project office for residents.

The Worli BDD Chawl redevelopment forms a key part of the broader BDD redevelopment programme covering Worli, N M Joshi Marg-Parel and Naigaon. MHADA, through the Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board, is serving as the nodal agency for executing the redevelopment project.

Under the rehabilitation plan, around 9,689 residents from 121 ageing chawls are expected to be rehabilitated. Eligible residents currently residing in 160 sq ft tenements will receive 2BHK homes with a carpet area of 500 sq ft free of cost on an ownership basis — a major upgrade in living standards and housing infrastructure.

The redevelopment blueprint includes construction of 34 rehabilitation towers, each rising up to 40 floors. The project also features stilt and part six-level podium parking, with one parking space planned for every tenement holder. Landscaped open spaces above the podium parking area are expected to improve community living and provide modern urban amenities within the township.

In a significant long-term commitment, MHADA has announced that it will maintain the rehabilitated buildings in the Worli project for 12 years after possession.

Closing Insight

The commencement of allotments at the Worli BDD Chawl redevelopment project is more than a procedural milestone — it reflects the gradual transformation of Mumbai’s ageing housing clusters into organised, modern and dignified residential communities. With larger homes, improved infrastructure and long-term maintenance support, the project is expected to become a defining example of rehabilitation-led urban redevelopment in the city.
