Housing Minister notifies about 3.65 crore jobs creation through the PMAY-Urban.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday that approximately 3.65 crore jobs would be created in the development of apartments and houses approved by the country’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

Puri further said 1.65 crore jobs have already been generated under the PMAY (U), during a webinar, arranged by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs said that 1.07 crore homes were approved against a 1.12 crore demand from the Ministry, of which 67 lakh houses are being constructed and 35 lakhs are delivered so far.

During the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Fostering Steel Use in the Housing & Building and Aviation Sector’ webinar, Puri said it was anticipated that 158 lakh metric tons of steel and 692 lakh metric tons of cement will be used in the development of the houses approved under the scheme.

He added that currently around 700 km of the metro network is operational in 18 cities and approx 900 km are being built in 27 cities.

“The 378 km metro network, which is likely to extend for 146 km (including 82 km of Delhi-Meerut RRTS), is operational in Delhi-NCR alone,” said the minister.

He said 40% or 600 million Indians of the country will reside in urban areas in 2030, adding, India will build 600 to 800 million square meters of urban space per annum before 2030, to cater for this increasing urban population.
