The Mumbai City Authority has announced that 125 houses for homeless people are being constructed in Mumbai, and 20 of these will be accessible in the next few months.
The Brihan Municipal Corporation (BMC) replied to an RTI query submitted by activist Anil Galgali, that it followed an order of the Supreme Court to build a shelter for every one lakh people in the city.
RTI responded that 148 such shelters were planned to be built in Mumbai by the municipal authorities. Of these, 125 shelter homes are being constructed and 20 will be accessible within the next few months, the BMC answered.
When asked why the civic body had not provided the required number of shelters, a senior municipal official pleaded for anonymity and assigned it to a “space crunch.”
“The city is already starving for space, even for the wealthy people who can afford to buy one. It is a challenging job for us to provide shelters for the poor. But the BMC has stepped up its efforts in providing shelters for the poor.” He said.
The official said that this was the first time shelter homes in the financial capital had arrived.
