A new traffic situation report in 56 countries claims that traffic flows in Mumbai is the worst in the world, while Delhi is nearest to fourth. In India’s financial capital, a rush-hour journey requires 65% longer. It’s 58% longer in Delhi, the study submitted by location technology expert TomTom on June 4, 2019, which also provides maps for Apple and Uber. However, it said traffic dropped mildly in 2018 in the two cities.

On August 20, 2019, the Maharashtra cabinet approved Rs 891 crores to implement the ITMS (intelligent traffic management system) project to streamline vehicle movement on Mumbai roads. “There is a need for a contemporary traffic management system to tackle the problems of time consumed while travelling, money spent on fuel owing to the vehicle pollution and traffic jams in Mumbai and its subsequent impact on productivity,” said a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.

“Mumbai has a road network of about 2000 kilometres. On these roads, city’s bridges and flyovers, the ITMS project will be carried out,” it added. The system can help in adjusting the signal time slot based on road traffic and its length, the statement said. The project will assist in intelligent signalling, identification of license number plates, monitoring of over-speeding vehicles and illegal parking, tracking of stolen vehicles and penalty recovery, it added.

The population of Mumbai is approximately 1.30 crores and its area is 438 sq km. In Mumbai, there are about 34 lakh vehicles, with a vehicle owned by 261 out of 1000 people in the city.
