Rajarhat’s construction waste recovery plant is nearing completion. According to a Kolkata Municipal Corporation official, the plant will begin operations in April. It will be able to handle 500 tonnes of waste per day.

Construction waste will be crushed into aggregates, which will then be mixed with concrete to pave roads. Non-biodegradable construction waste includes head break concrete blocks, pile caps, and broken tiles. Instead of disposing of them, they can be used to pave driveways.

A 5-acre piece of property has been planned for the installation of a mechanical plant for construction waste recovery, according to a source in the KMC solid waste management department. “We’ve appeared at the end of the installation process. “We intend to start operations in April,” said a city official.

The civic body will collect waste from smaller housing projects and transport it to this Rajarhat unit rather than dumping it in landfills. Larger projects that generate 20 tonnes or more of waste per day will need to set up a plant on the construction site.

According to a KMC solid waste management department official, the decision to establish the construction waste recovery plant in Rajarhat was made after the civic body was given 5-acre land by Hidco.

According to KMC sources, an agreement was signed with a private firm to establish and operate a construction waste recovery plant for ten years.

“We’re counting on this project to solve our construction waste problems.” If this model proves to be successful, we may need to plan another similar plant in the Garden Reach area. “We’ve begun looking for suitable land for this purpose,” a KMC official said.
