In the hill town, there is a new format of property tax, which gives green buildings a 50% exemption. Under the new rules, the Dharamshala Municipal Corporation’s (DMC) meeting of the General House decided on 30 January all families below the poverty line and cowsheds were exempted from paying property tax.

When approached, Devender Jaggi, Mayor of Dharamshala said earlier, there were no property tax regulations since the creation of a corporation. “At this point, new regulations will be implemented which will improve the company’s revenue and bring about consistent taxes,” he said.

“Green buildings will receive a 50% rebate. These are the buildings that have solar systems and rain harvesting systems. Mud houses are also going to receive an exemption,” said the mayor. Officials will carry out a survey of the entire city and new fully-fused regions, would be also taken into consideration, he added.

The overall area of the DMC jurisdiction is 27.6 sq km, split into 17 wards. The population of the city is 53,543 with 10,978 houses.

Previously, Himachal Pradesh only had one corporation at Shimla hill capital.

The council of Dharamshala was upgraded to a municipal corporation in 2015.

Recently, DMC launched a charge for the filmmakers who come to the city to earn some revenue from the scenic spots. The fee ranged from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per day depending on the movies, documentaries, album songs and TV shows.
