The Municipal Corporation of East Delhi has decided to change totally to the online tax collection method. A government entity notification states that property tax returns are now accepted only online. Manual return filing has been taken out.

According to the order issued by the accessor and collector office, the change is intended to increase transparency and effectiveness. “In compliance with the guidelines for ease of doing business, it has been determined that from April 1, 2021, property tax returns will only be allowed online.”

Delhi’s three municipal corporations have been gradually transitioning their various services, including property tax payment, to online mode. South Delhi Municipal Corporation recently uploaded all of the old property tax return records online. A new property tax platform was also created last year, but taxpayers have reported a number of issues with it.

Meanwhile, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the corporations were able to increase their property tax collection in 2020-21. North Corporation Mayor Jai Prakash reported that they received approximately Rs 645 crore as opposed to Rs 548 crore the previous year.

The number of taxpayers rose by 5,000 as well. This fiscal year, a total of 4,23,000 individuals paid taxes. According to the mayor, almost 48,000 taxpayers have benefited from our amnesty scheme, which was initiated in January of this year.

The scheme raised approximately Rs 230 crore, while taxpayers who benefited from it received approximately Rs 500 crore in relief.
