Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal appealed landlords not to compel tenants to pay rent for a few months.

On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the landlords not to compel tenants to pay rent for two or three months, saying that the rent would be paid by his government if tenants fail to do so.

“I appeal to all landlords not to compel tenants to pay rent for two or three months. Just postpone it for a few months. If anyone cannot pay, the government will pay for them,” Kejriwal said while addressing a digital press conference. “If any landlord still pressures his tenants to pay the rent, it is going to take stern measures against him,” he said.

Kejriwal also encouraged industrialists, businessmen, and other well-to-do families to support those in distress during the lockdown. “If you have gained wealth, now is the time to make use of it. During these days we need to support each other. So don’t let the workers go hungry,” he added.

Kejriwal also called the grouping of migrant workers as “dangerous” and requested them to stay back, adding that his government is working hard to provide them with all the necessary facilities during the lockdown enforced to curb COVID-19 spread.

Commenting on the opposition parties’ allegations against the Delhi government, he said: “There is no time for politics. All parties need to come together and help the people in these days. I would like to urge my party workers not to engage in a political slugfest.”

Manoj Tiwari, Delhi BJP unit chief, asked Kejriwal to take actions so that migrant workers return to their homes.
