MMRDA’s Badlapur Waste Facility Reaches 60% Progress

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved 60% physical progress on its integrated solid-waste processing facility at Badlapur, according to its September 16 update. The facility has a planned processing capacity of 600 tonnes per day (TPD).

The project is being developed to cater to Ambernath, Kulgaon-Badlapur and Ulhasnagar, creating a common waste-management system for the three urban local bodies.

The facility will include a Material Recovery Facility, biodegradable-waste processing units and a sanitary landfill. It is being implemented under a Design-Build-Operate-Transfer model and supported through the KfW-funded Mumbai Metropolitan Region Urban Infrastructure Improvement Programme.

Once operational, the facility is expected to increase the recovery of recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, metals and glass. Biodegradable waste will also be processed into compost, while the facility is planned to produce Refuse Derived Fuel.

According to MMRDA, the project is intended to reduce dependence on open dumping and improve scientific treatment of municipal waste. The authority has also said that better waste processing could help address issues such as odour, fire risks and uncontrolled waste disposal.

The project forms part of the broader effort to strengthen urban infrastructure and waste-management capacity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
