Housing Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said on Wednesday that his Government will approach the ministry of shipping and surface transport for the 100-acre Mumbai Port Trust to build transit camps to provide alternative accommodation for “dangerous” building occupants.
“The government decided to redevelop the 500-odd hazardous buildings in the city after the fall of the Dongri building. We felt that it would be simpler to vacate those houses if people had alternative accommodation in southern Mumbai as most such buildings are located in this region,” said Vikhe Patil. He said that if the shipping ministry accepts the proposal of the State, Mhada, the planning authority for the purpose, will be nominated for constructing transit-camps. “Mhada already manages the port trust land with a total of 450 cessed buildings. These structures will also need to be redeveloped in the future. In addition to redevelopment, Mhada will develop dangerous cluster buildings.”
The Action Plan on the cluster development of dangerous buildings, and the suggested ordinance to amend Mhada Act for rapid cluster development was taken at the meeting with additional chief secretary of housing, Sanjay Kumar, Mhada managing director Milind Mhaiskar and SRA’s CEO Deepak Kapoor.
A senior bureaucrat has stated that an order will be presented to state cabinet next week to amend the Mhada Act.
