The government stated on 18 August, that Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani authorised the development of 70 floors or higher buildings for five key cities. In compliance with the new law, for tall structures in the state, the highest legal cap was 23 floors.

The state government now proposed to amend the General GDCR (General Development Control Regulation) to permit for the construction of high-rise structures of 70 or more floors in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Gandhinagar, an official release stated.

Proposed rules for government-approved high rise buildings will refer to structures above 100 meters in height.

The release stated that it would create a special technical committee to authorize such projects. If the proposed height is more than 150 metres, then the plot size for the construction of a skyscraper of 100-150 meters must be 2,500 sqm and 3,500 sqm.

The release also mentioned that, in addition to planning a disaster management strategy, the model system wind tunnel test is also been made mandatory in compliance with new regulations.

Rupani seemed to be hopeful that new regulations will ensure that land is used optimally and ultimately reduce housing prices.
