Mira Road Flyover Design

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has clarified concerns over the design of a flyover in the Mira–Bhayander area after social media posts showed a transition from four lanes to two.

The visuals sparked questions among daily commuters, with many raising concerns about traffic flow and safety on one of the region’s busy suburban roads.

Responding to the debate, the MMRDA said the design follows existing road-width limitations and long-term traffic planning.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the authority said, “The flyover does not ‘suddenly narrow.’ The transition from 4 lanes to 2 lanes is not a design flaw, but is based on available road width constraints, and future network planning.”
According to the authority, the flyover has been designed with two lanes towards Bhayander East, while provision has been kept for two additional lanes towards Bhayander West in the future. Since the Bhayander East arm comes first along the alignment, the four-lane section currently merges into two lanes. The remaining two lanes on the outer side are planned as part of a future extension across the Western Railway line.

Up to Golden Nest Circle, where five major roads meet and traffic volume is high, a 2+2 lane flyover integrated with the Metro has been provided. Slip roads on both sides have also been constructed to help traffic move smoothly through the junction.
Beyond this point, towards Bhayander East, the available road space reduces as per the Development Plan (DP). As a result, a 1+1 lane flyover with separate up and down ramps has been built along the median to allow uninterrupted movement towards Railway Phatak Road.

The MMRDA said the design allows vehicles to cross one of the busiest junctions in the Mira–Bhayander region while working within existing space constraints. Provision has also been kept for future widening, under which an additional 1+1 lane can be added on the outer side of both carriageways to improve east–west traffic connectivity, subject to approvals and coordination with the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC).

The flyover is expected to reduce traffic and make daily travel easier. Safety measures such as speed breakers, clear signboards, lane markings, reflective markers, and safety barriers have been provided. The project will be opened after traffic police feedback is reviewed.
