The Delhi government will provide guidance on electric vehicle charging in residential colonies.
The Delhi government is targeting office building complexes, shopping malls, residential colonies, and group housing societies in the city to strengthen the city’s network of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.
While the government recently released a step-by-step guide for shopping malls to install chargers, officials said a similar guide for residential colonies would be released soon.
In November of last year, the government released a guidebook for employers on planning, installing, and managing EV charging at office complexes. The guidebooks were created by the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC) and the World Resource Institute (WRI) India.
According to DDC Vice-Chairman Jasmine Shah, the three locations where an EV owner can leave his vehicle for charging for a longer period of time are residential societies, market areas, and office complexes. He went on to say that the Delhi government was encouraging people to install private chargers in these areas. According to him, the government is also offering a Rs 6,000 subsidy to private individuals for the installation of such charging docks.
“The Delhi government has already put in place a single-window clearance system for anyone interested in implementing a charger in private or semipublic places to apply for and automatically gain all clearances.” “A electricity distribution company has been assigned as the nodal agency to process the application,” Shah said.
In 2020, the Delhi government announced its EV policy. The policy aims to improve Delhi’s air quality by accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, with the goal of reaching 25% of all new vehicle sales by 2024.
While the workplace guidebook encourages corporates based in Delhi to work with the government to promote EVs, some shopping mall owners have expressed interest in reserving 5% of their total parking space for step charging infrastructure.
The government will encourage residents’ welfare associations to install chargers in the parking lots of colonies and housing societies in its next guide for residential complexes.
According to various estimates, approximately 90% of electric vehicle charging occurs at home or at work. Because the vehicles are idle in the workplace parking lot, the time can be used for charging.
