On 16 July 2019, the High Court of Bombay annulled the CRZ Clearance granted to the city civic body’s ambitious Rs 14000 cr Coastal Road project. The Court ruling states that a 29.2 km long project proposed to connect the Marine Drive area in the South of Mumbai to suburban Borivali in north Mumbai cannot be continued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) clearances were dismissed by the chief justice division bench named as Pradeep Nandrajog and justice NM Jamdar, which allowed for a lot of petitions filed by activists, residents and fishermen from the town opposing the project. “We are quashing the CRZ project clearances. We maintained that the project requires an environmental clearance,” said the bench. Counsel for the BMC Darius Khambata had appealed to seek a stay of the order at the Supreme Court. However, the high court rejected the application.
