39,111 Unauthorised Slum Structures Face BMC Action From October 1
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to launch a three-month enforcement campaign against unauthorised constructions in Mumbai’s slum areas from October 1, 2026.
The civic body has identified 39,111 slum structures measuring 14 feet or more in height for action. The drive will continue until December 31, with the BMC asking occupants to voluntarily remove unauthorised additions and constructions before enforcement action begins.
According to data released by the civic administration, Mumbai has approximately 2,23,150 slum structures. Of the 39,111 structures identified for action, 3,348 are in Mumbai city, 4,536 in the western suburbs and 31,227 in the eastern suburbs.
Action already taken against thousands
The BMC said enforcement action has already been carried out against 4,584 structures from the identified list, while notices have been issued to another 611 structures.
The civic body has appealed to occupants of the remaining structures to remove unauthorised portions themselves. Officials have indicated that structures that are not voluntarily cleared could face action during the special drive.
Drive to cover October to December
The special campaign will run for three months, from October 1 to December 31. It is part of the BMC’s continuing efforts to address unauthorised construction in densely populated parts of Mumbai.
The civic administration has also directed its ward-level machinery to continue identifying and acting against unauthorised constructions. Between August 24 and September 15, action was taken against 128 unauthorised constructions, while action against another 140 structures was planned.
Eastern suburbs account for largest share
The figures show a significant concentration of the structures identified for action in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. Of the total 39,111 structures, more than 31,000 are located in the eastern suburbs, compared with 4,536 in the western suburbs and 3,348 in the city area.
The BMC has urged residents not to undertake unauthorised construction and to remove illegal additions where they already exist.
The October 1 drive is expected to put renewed focus on construction activity and building safety in Mumbai’s densely populated slum settlements.
