BMC Orders Monsoon Safety Curbs at Mumbai Construction Sites Amid IMD Red Alert

With Mumbai witnessing intense rainfall and strong winds following the India Meteorological Department’s red alert, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed developers and contractors across the city to suspend hazardous construction activities and reinforce safety measures at project sites.

The directive, issued as a precautionary measure, places the safety of construction workers, neighbouring residents and the general public at the forefront. Stressing that compliance is mandatory, the civic body has called upon all stakeholders to ensure that ongoing projects remain secure during the monsoon season.

The advisory has been addressed to developers, architects, licensed surveyors, contractors, project managers and site engineers, asking them to conduct immediate inspections of scaffolding, tower cranes, material hoists, safety nets, formwork, tin sheets and other temporary structures. Authorities have been instructed to verify that these installations are stable and adequately fastened to withstand adverse weather conditions.

In addition, construction firms have been asked to remove or firmly secure loose materials placed on terraces, upper floors and elevated platforms to minimise the risk of accidents caused by gusty winds.

The BMC has further emphasised that lifting operations and work at heights should be suspended wherever weather conditions pose a threat to worker safety.
Project authorities have also been directed to establish exclusion zones beneath active work areas as an added precaution.

Beyond structural checks, developers have been instructed to undertake site-wide safety audits, ensure that workers are equipped with the prescribed personal protective equipment and fall-protection systems, and closely monitor weather updates until conditions improve.

Mumbai’s rapidly evolving skyline is being shaped by large-scale infrastructure, redevelopment and housing projects. However, the latest advisory serves as a reminder that construction activity and urban expansion must go hand in hand with robust safety practices, particularly during the monsoon months when the city remains vulnerable to extreme weather events.
