Since the total number of students from abroad enrolled in India increased by 36% as of 2012-2013 due to a variety of government measures taken place, demand for student housing has never been higher.

In order to stimulate the “Study in India” initiative, in the previous budget, the government declared an “Ind-SAT” program to be held in Asian and African countries, which would attract foreign students to Indian universities.

The recent budget allocated Rs 99,300 crore to education and the Rs 3,000 crore for skill development, by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The government expects 200,000 international students, more than four times the current figure, to be attracted to India. Currently, 47,427 foreign students from 164 different countries have been enrolled in India.

According to an ANAROCK Property Consultant Report, this number has increased by 36% since 2012-2013 when there were just over 34,770 International students in India.

In the last three years, the number of beds in hostels in the top 10 states has increased quite decently by 6.55%. However, the increase in student enrollments did not keep pace.

Total enrollments were estimated at 36.6 million in 2017-18, and the hostel intake was 6.5 million. The number of admissions increased to more than 37 million in 2018-19, whereas the hostel intake remained at 6.5 million, it said.

In the Indian educational institutions, only a fraction of the student housing demand can be fulfilled with hostels and residence facilities.

Other than these leading cities, new opportunities for student housing are emerging in tier 2 and 3 cities like Kota, Pilani, Indore, Nagpur and Mesra that have premiere educational institutes.
