The Pune Municipal Corporation’s standing committee has issued its go-ahead to allot Rs 233.75 crore for the Swargate-Katraj Metro extension, which is estimated to cost Rs 4.283 crore.

The Standing Committee also sought the consent of the general body to delegate the operation of the project to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) and present the final path alignment in the Development Plan (DP). The Standing Committee also made it clear that the Civic Administration would not bear any responsibility for the loan which would be sought by the Union and the state governments for the implementation of the project.

According to the plan, the construction on the Swargate-Katraj extension will be undertaken in the second phase of the Metro plan, which is projected to be finished by 2028. The segment would be an extension of the PCMC-Swargate Metro line, the underground portion of which is Shivajinagar to Swargate.

The MahaMetro has already begun civil work on Metro’s first phase in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, two corridors of which are planned to cover 33 km distance. Three options were under discussion for the extension, including a complete elevated stretch, maximum underground stretch and alignment through Market Yard. The DPR, which gives priority to underground stretch, has suggested three stations and some private land acquisition for the project.

The Metro extension up to Katraj was shown in the 2017 DP. The Standing Committee also proposed the implementation of the new DP map modifications.
