Nashik local authority is organizing a crusade to take action against property tax defaulters in January 2024.

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has determined that in January of next year, it will launch a recovery campaign against property tax defaulters.

Officials from the civic body were notified by NMC commissioner Ashok Karanjkar to meet the goal of collecting Rs210 crore in property taxes by the end of December of this year. For the current fiscal year, this tax collection goal has been set.

That being said, NMC has decided to issue warrants for the confiscation of the properties of the previous tax defaulters beginning in January.

“We will serve warrants to large taxpayers who have not paid their property taxes, threatening to withhold payment for up to 21 days. NMC officials threatened to seize their properties if they didn’t comply.

With 12 days left in December, the NMC has already earned Rs148 crore or around 70% of the targeted amount for tax collection. This indicates that they still owe Rs. 62 crore in unpaid property taxes.

In November, NMC sent almost 2 lakh defaulters their first notice, requesting that they settle their outstanding tax obligations. Nevertheless, just Rs 30 crore of the outstanding Rs 150 crore had been paid to the civic authority.

NMC representatives added that to recover unpaid taxes from property tax defaulters, they were considering cutting off their water supply.

Additionally, NMC intends to determine which properties, even after construction completion certificates (BCCs) have been issued, have not yet been included in the tax net. About 10,000 properties are underutilized, yet they are not subject to property tax, according to NMC authorities.

The head of the NMC has also instructed the relevant officials to follow up with the departments of the state and federal governments to collect unpaid property and water taxes.
