Maharashtra Clears ₹22,000-Crore Metro Link Between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airports
The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday approved a 35-km Metro project to connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai international airports at a cost exceeding Rs 22,000 crore, officials said.
The proposed Metro corridor will have 20 stations, including six underground and 14 elevated stations. The project aims to improve airport-to-airport connectivity and reduce pressure on existing road and suburban rail networks across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
According to official estimates, land acquisition for the project will cover 30.7 hectares and is expected to cost Rs 388 crore.
The infrastructure committee cleared the Metro Line 8 project at a total cost of Rs 22,862 crore. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed that all land acquisition and statutory approvals—from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport—be completed within six months. Construction is targeted to be completed within three years of the approvals.
Of the total 35-km alignment, 9.25 km will be underground, running from Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 to Ghatkopar East. The remaining 24.63 km will be an elevated stretch from Ghatkopar West to Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal 2.
In addition to the Metro project, the committee approved the Nashik city ring road project, spanning 66.15 km, at a cost of Rs 3,954 crore, in view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela.
The panel also cleared the upgradation of the 85.76-km Navegaon More–Konsari–Mulchera–Hedri–Surjagad highway in Gadchiroli district into a four-lane cement concrete road to facilitate mineral transportation.
Officials said the approvals reflect the state government’s focus on time-bound execution of major infrastructure projects to avoid delays and strengthen regional connectivity.
