Gurugram Civic Body Issues Notices to 22 Property Owners Owing Over ₹50 Lakh Each in Taxes

Abhay Shah - May 21, 2025

GURUGRAM: In a major enforcement move, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on Tuesday issued notices to 22 prominent property tax defaulters, each of whom owes more than ₹50 lakh in outstanding dues.

The step was initiated by the MCG’s taxation department as part of a larger campaign to recover unpaid taxes and strengthen municipal revenue collections.

Alongside this immediate action, the civic body has also compiled a comprehensive list of 100 top defaulters from each municipal zone, indicating a broader push for accountability.

The MCG’s intensified drive comes amidst growing concerns over the volume of unpaid property taxes, which are vital for the city’s development initiatives and the delivery of essential services. Officials emphasized that such tax evasion directly impacts the planning and execution of urban infrastructure projects, sanitation services, and overall civic maintenance.

Adding to the urgency, the civic body has also been addressing widespread confusion related to property ID errors. To combat malpractices and prevent exploitation of residents, the MCG issued an advisory urging the public not to engage with unauthorized intermediaries or agents claiming to offer property tax services.

Instead, residents have been directed to report any such instances directly to the Commissioner or Additional Commissioner. The corporation assured swift and strict action in cases where individuals are found soliciting money for property tax-related services or corrections.

MCG officials reiterated that under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, payment of property tax is compulsory for all types of constructed buildings and vacant plots within the city’s jurisdiction.

Failure to pay the due tax amount attracts a penal interest of 18% per annum. If dues remain unpaid even after the issuance of notices, the municipal body is empowered to seal and eventually auction off the concerned properties to recover the arrears.

“Strict and sustained action against long-standing defaulters is essential. A transparent and regular campaign will not only boost municipal revenues but also help foster a stronger culture of civic responsibility. This is a significant step toward the planned and sustainable development of Gurugram,” stated MCG Joint Commissioner Vishal Kumar.

According to data provided by the MCG’s taxation department, a total of 11,159 objections have been submitted by residents regarding property tax issues since April 1, 2025. Of these, 7,622 objections have already been resolved within the mandated timeframe.

However, 554 objections were rejected due to a lack of proper documentation, while 1,700 were returned to the applicants because of deficiencies in their submissions. As of now, 1,283 cases are still pending at the municipal level.

In an effort to simplify the resolution process and ensure equitable service delivery, help desks have been set up at MCG offices for those who may not be familiar with the online systems or are unable to navigate the digital application process independently. Trained staff at these help desks are available to assist residents with submitting their objections and completing other tax-related formalities.

Further, the civic administration has directed all zonal taxation officers to listen attentively to each complaint and to work toward resolving them without unnecessary delay.

Officials emphasized that the timely redressal of tax-related issues is not just a service obligation but a matter of public trust and transparency.

To reinforce administrative accountability, all staff within the taxation department have been strictly instructed not to leave any application pending without valid justification.

Moreover, any case of rejection or reversal must be well-documented and explained to the applicant. If any employee is found to be negligent in handling applications or failing to act promptly, the MCG has warned of disciplinary measures, including departmental action.

This multi-pronged approach by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram underscores its renewed commitment to streamlining the property tax system, cracking down on defaulters, and restoring public confidence in the functioning of the city’s civic administration.
