A civic body in Indore has identified 2,500 people who have not paid their water and property taxes.
INDORE: About 2500 people have been recognized by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) as defaulters with over Rs 1 lakh in unpaid property and water taxes.
“We have located about 2500 defaulters who owe property and water taxes totaling at least Rs 1 lakh or more. Of them, roughly Rs 200 crore is still owed to ten ministries and establishments.
IMC’s additional commissioner Abhilash Mishra stated, “We have some accounts to clear with the railroads, the Indore Development Authority (IDA), and some other government organizations.
He continued by saying that the IMC would try to collect the property tax debt of certain colonists, which totaled crores. “In the recent past, some property was also seized as part of our drive to tighten the noose around big defaulters,” he stated.
According to senior IMC officials, property taxes, water taxes, market rent, and various service fees have already brought in about Rs 400 crore in revenue. However, as the civic body hopes to record total revenue of almost Rs 800 crore by the end of this fiscal year, it is barely halfway done.
IMC currently owes contractors about Rs 400 crore in addition to its total debt of about Rs 800 crore in bank loans.
