Mumbai: Due to unpaid property taxes, BMC notifies five contractors working on metro projects.

On Tuesday, the Mumbai civic body announced that it had sent final notices to five contractors involved in different metro rail projects in the city for failing to pay property taxes totaling approximately Rs 326.22 crore.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a release that these enterprises have received final warnings requiring payment within seven days for failing to pay property taxes.

In the event that contractors fail to pay the tax within the allotted seven days, the civic body threatened to seize their assets. According to the press release, these contractors received notifications from the BMC last month requesting them to pay their overdue property taxes within a 21-day window.

According to the release, the companies failed to pay their property tax obligations within the allotted 21 days, so the civic body issued final notices. According to the statement, one contractor has not paid property taxes since FY2010–11, while four of the five contractors have not paid since FY 2016–17.

The deadline for paying property taxes for FY 2023–2024 has been extended by the BMC to May 25. The financial capital is currently seeing the completion of various metro train projects, and the civic organization has made sites at Wadala available primarily for the establishment of casting yards.

According to the announcement, under the terms of the agreements that Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) and the individual companies signed, contractors are the only ones who have to pay property taxes associated with using these plots.
