In Coimbatore, a corporation collects 43% of outstanding property taxes.

COIMBATORE: The city corporation has recovered 43% of unpaid property taxes with around 15 days left in the current fiscal year.

Just 38% of the corporation’s unpaid taxes from the previous year were finally collected. Arrears totaled 103 crores at the start of the current fiscal year, of which 44.56 crore have been collected.

According to Corporation Commissioner M Prathap, severe warnings were given to defaulters using public announcement systems. “In several locations, tax collectors have been holding camps to collect unpaid taxes. In some locations, they conducted door-to-door collections.

Commercial properties held by tax defaulters who resisted paying taxes on purpose were sealed. Such efforts aided in the recovery of unpaid debts that had accumulated for up to 10 years.”

They expressed confidence in collecting more than 90% of the property tax due for the current fiscal year. “Estimated property tax revenue for the current fiscal year is 355.46 crore, of which 296.43 crore, or 83.4% of the estimate, has been collected by officials. Our goal is to gather 95% of the estimated amount.”

“During the weekends, we held special camps in residential neighborhoods, which aided in the improvement of the collection. In fact, the entire month of February saw a staggering 90 crore in revenue “

According to him, “Although other zones have gone above the 85% level, the south zone has not even hit 80% so far.” the south zone trails the other four zones in terms of collection statistics.

Meanwhile, 58% of the water rates and 95% of the professional tax have been paid for the current fiscal year.
